Adam’s Music is proud to offer in-store, private guitar lessons with Russell Mines. Russell is an accomplished guitar player, composer, arranger, performer, and teacher. He’s been a fixture on the Los Angeles and greater California music scene since the 1980s, and he has a long track record of helping his students reach their musical goals.
Russell began his career as a member of Foreplay, a popular Northern California band. The band made a successful independent EP, and they toured the region for five years. He later attended the College of Marin in Kentfield, California, where he made the Dean’s list and received an associate’s degree in music composition.
Russell then moved to Los Angeles to attend the highly regarded Guitar Institute of Technology, part of the Musician’s Institute in Hollywood. While still attending GIT, he performed in the band for the highly acclaimed 20th anniversary production of the hit musical Hair, starring Rain Pryor, with musical director Steven Bernstein.
Russell graduated from Musician’s Institute in 1988, and began teaching at Adam’s Music shortly after. Since that time, Russell has used his wide-ranging education and performance experience to help dozens of students achieve their musical goals. Many of Russell’s students have gone on to notable professional music careers, including both guitar players in Phantom Planet:
Russell is also a published BMI songwriter, with useful experience in musical composition, arranging, producing, and placement and licensing of music in the advertising, television, and film industry. Russell co-wrote and produced the song It’s Only Darkness for the made for television movie Wanted, starring Tracy Gold, Timothy Busfield, and Robert Culp. The song featured lead vocals by ex-Santana lead vocalist Alex Ligertwood. Another song from the same recording session won honorable mention in the 1997 John Lennon Songwriting Contest.
Russell has performed for enthusiastic crowds in the Los Angeles area as part of Blue Rock and the Samurai Homeboys, who were featured at a benefit concert series sponsored by the Wilshire District Chamber of Commerce. He was also the manager of the A&R Music Center, overseeing recording, rehearsal and performances. Russell continues to compose, arrange, perform, and record original music.
