Type: Clarinet
Brand: Selmer
Serial No.: Q5049
Considered to be one of the best Jazz clarinets ever produced, the Centered Tone (CT) clarinet was the top professional clarinet made by Selmer starting in 1952. The CT continues to be a sought after model over 50 years after it was first designed. Benny Goodman wholeheartedly endorsed the Selmer CT, and played it during many of his recording sessions and live performances.
The clarinet has a large bore, and large tone holes, which gives it an expressive, free-blowing feeling. The design also results in excellent projection, which gives you an advantage when performing with a full band. The Selmer CT also has the highest quality key mechanism. Players have described it as tight, stable, and solid as a rock. Most importantly, the clarinet has a unique, deep, woody tone, that hasn’t been replicated by a clarinet since. Every note from the lowest register to the upper reaches of altissimo is clear and strong. The Selmer Centered Tone’s design makes it ideal for jazz musicians, but it’s a very versatile instrument and great for any genre.
Here’s a recording made with a different Selmer Centered Tone clarinet from a similar vintage:
Based on the serial number we can tell that this clarinet was made in 1956, which falls in the “golden era” for Selmer horns. The body of the clarinet is in great shape and has all the original parts. The nickel-plated keywork is also in excellent condition. The clarinet comes with an aftermarket case that’s appropriate for the instrument.
